The Naming Of Cats

The Naming of Cats is a difficult matter,
It isn’t just one of your holiday games;
You may think at first I’m as mad as a hatter
When I tell you, a cat must have THREE DIFFERENT NAMES.
First of all, there’s the name that the family use daily,
Such as Peter, Augustus, Alonzo or James,
Such as Victor or Jonathan, George or Bill Bailey–
All of them sensible everyday names.
There are fancier names if you think they sound sweeter,
Some for the gentlemen, some for the dames:
Such as Plato, Admetus, Electra, Demeter–
But all of them sensible everyday names.
But I tell you, a cat needs a name that’s particular,
A name that’s peculiar, and more dignified,
Else how can he keep up his tail perpendicular,
Or spread out his whiskers, or cherish his pride?
Of names of this kind, I can give you a quorum,
Such as Munkustrap, Quaxo, or Coricopat,
Such as Bombalurina, or else Jellylorum-
Names that never belong to more than one cat.
But above and beyond there’s still one name left over,
And that is the name that you never will guess;
The name that no human research can discover–
But THE CAT HIMSELF KNOWS, and will never confess.
When you notice a cat in profound meditation,
The reason, I tell you, is always the same:
His mind is engaged in a rapt contemplation
Of the thought, of the thought, of the thought of his name:
His ineffable effable
Effanineffable
Deep and inscrutable singular Name.
去年9月，百老汇长盛不衰的音乐剧《猫》终于在深圳上演，本猫当然不能错过，印象最深的除了深蓝色的蒸汽朋克风舞台布景之外，还有上半场结束时的那曲《Memory》，当女高音唱出Silence时，现场听众整个都融化了。
这部音乐剧根据艾略特的一部诗集改编而来，舞台音乐和表演再现了一个在深邃的夜幕中群猫聚集的世界，炫目的声光电效果也让诗歌增色不少。因此，如果看过音乐剧再来读诗，将会对艾略特的诗有更形象深刻的理解。
The Naming of Cats 是其中的一首，同样出自艾略特的诗集《老负鼠的群猫英雄谱》(Old Possum’ s Book of Practical Cats, 1939)。在这首作品中，诗人告诉小读者们，一只猫必须有三个名字：一个是家人给它取的，比较亲昵可爱；一个带着独有的特征，仅属于那只猫；还有一个全天下只有猫自己知道，而且永不透露。
英语中与姓名相关的文化非常特别有趣，这里由于篇幅所限就不多赘述了，以后有机会再详细探讨吧。

巴罗的 Plant Architecture
巴罗的画迷之魅力。
BBC之前拍摄了一部布克奖小说剧《英伦魔法师》，其中一集魔法师乔纳森进入了镜子的世界，那场景与巴罗的这幅画有异曲同工之妙。

图书馆终于正常开放了。博物馆的展览也多了起来。再过不久便是立秋。

[后记] “骑”做名词时，读“寄”；诗词的平仄决定了有些多音字不可以被删减成单音字。宋琬这首《破阵子》的用色让人瞬间又想到巴罗的超现实主义画作Plant Architecture。
深黑，青冥，秋月明；半紫半红，如歌如哭，阴崖残雪……画面虽很阴郁，写得却极美。
