The Road Not Taken

Two roads diverged in a yellow wood,
And sorry I could not travel both
And be one traveler, long I stood
And looked down one as far as I could
To where it bent in the undergrowth;
Then took the other, as just as fair,
And having perhaps the better claim,
Because it was grassy and wanted wear;
Though as for that the passing there
Had worn them really about the same,
And both that morning equally lay
In leaves no step had trodden black.
Oh, I kept the first for another day!
Yet knowing how way leads on to way,
I doubted if I should ever come back.
I shall be telling this with a sigh
Somewhere ages and ages hence:
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I—
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.
这首闻名于世的关于“选择与不确定状态”的诗写于1915年，那年，罗伯特·弗罗斯特(Robert Frost)已经41岁。这位美国诗人20岁开始发表诗作，40岁才出版第一本书，此后曾斩获普利策奖，终于成为当时最著名的诗人。
这首作品虽然没有华美的语言，却非常巧妙地通过一些语言上的模棱两可，给出了一种心理上的不确定状态。读至最后那句“I took the one less traveled by,/And that has made all the difference“，不够细心的读者或许会认为，诗人选择那条少有人走的小径时内心是坚定的，并且为此感到骄傲，但其实他并不确定那条小径真的比另一条更“少有人行”，因为此前他就曾质疑过，“Though as for that the passing there/Had worn them really about the same,”走上另一条路之后他才发现，也许两条路人迹罕至的程度都一样。
大概无论东方还是西方，人类的心理基本都是共通的。这首诗不免让人想起张爱玲的《红玫瑰与白玫瑰》，不管你选择了哪一个，到最后都会遗憾地发现，原来另一个才是美好与向往。
