It was many and many a year ago,
In a kingdom by the sea,
That a maiden there lived whom you may know
By the name of Annabel Lee;
And this maiden she lived with no other thought
Than to love and be loved by me.
I was a child and she was a child,
In this kingdom by the sea,
But we loved with a love that was more than love—
I and my Annabel Lee—
With a love that the wingèd seraphs of Heaven
Coveted her and me.
And this was the reason that, long ago,
In this kingdom by the sea,
A wind blew out of a cloud, chilling
My beautiful Annabel Lee;
So that her highborn kinsmen came
And bore her away from me,
To shut her up in a sepulchre
In this kingdom by the sea.
The angels, not half so happy in Heaven,
Went envying her and me—
Yes!—that was the reason (as all men know,
In this kingdom by the sea)

Chilling and killing my Annabel Lee.
But our love it was stronger by far than the love
Of those who were older than we—
Of many far wiser than we—
And neither the angels in Heaven above

爱伦坡的情诗对爱的表达单纯、强烈而执着。在他的诗里，这种情感已经强烈到自成逻辑，控制了整个世界，屏蔽了其他一切存在，连死亡都无法阻挡。这首诗中，少女Annabel Lee与诗人深深地相爱，尽管那时候他们都还是孩子。爱情让他们无比快乐，但少女却不幸离世，诗人无法接受这个现实，唯一的解释只能是天堂中最尊贵的六翼天使嫉妒他们的快乐，于是夺走了她。这样的解释本身是稚嫩的，也暗示诗人的内心永远停在了过去，永远陪伴着曾经的爱人，不再成长，也不再接受现实的变化。于是，诗的第一句便是“It was many and many a year ago,In a kingdom by the sea”，听起来像极了一个童话故事的开始，却在快乐的回忆中流露着深深的哀伤。诗人对少女执着的爱让他愿意夜夜守在她的坟墓里，躺在她的尸体旁，聆听着大海的波涛，看着暗夜中的星辰，像是看见了她的眼睛。
“伤逝”是爱伦坡十分偏爱的主题，他曾说这是全世界最具诗意的话题（”the most poetical topic in the world”)，这首诗是坡去世前完成的最后一首诗歌作品，他还写过另一首同样以伤逝为主题的著名诗歌，《The Raven》。
